Theoretical basis

TimberCalc v1 is a preliminary timber member checker for beams and columns. Beam actions are based on simple supported span formulae for UDL and central point load. Column checks use axial stress with a simple effective-length slenderness and buckling reduction.

The app is intended for quick sizing and independent sense-checking. It does not replace a full code design for bearing, notches, holes, lateral torsional buckling, fire, vibration, connection detailing, instability interaction or full load combination design.

Input notes

For beams, UDL and central point load are used to calculate bending, shear and deflection. For columns, axial load is checked about both principal axes using the larger buckling utilisation. A combined utilisation is also reported where axial and bending are both present.
